Inspire: Jeff Piattelli

If you live in the Okanagan Valley, you have probably heard the sweet sounds of singer-songwriter Jeff Piattelli at your favourite bar, winery or local event. Jeff has swooned audiences from Pentiction to Vernon with his brilliant acoustic sets and has grown to be a household name in the Valley’s event industry. With the recent launch of his first EP “The Waves” there is no where but up for this local rockstar! We sit down with Jeff to chat about his love for music, growth in career and what’s next for him as a professional musician.

Tell me a little about yourself. Aside from music what are your passions?
Sometimes I worry that people think that all I do or care about is Music, which is true to a certain extent. However, I have always been in love with sports and physical exercise. Before pursuing music I always wanted to be a pro athlete. Asides from that, I love to cook (I’m Italian) I love to have a laugh and make jokes, and be around my family.

What drove you to pursue a career in music?
When I was very young, I will never forget the day my Dad had the song “Beat It” my Michael Jackson blasting on our record player downstairs. When I first heard the guitar solo (still my favourite of all time) come on, I instantly fell in love. My Dad also happened to be a guitar player and always had one laying around, so when you mix those two things together it was almost a sure bet. It wasn’t until High School when I got more into the singing side of things.

You write all of your own music. Where do you get your inspiration from?
I have always been someone that, when I wrote, it all just came to me in a very smooth manor. Ive never been able to force myself to write a song. Ive always considered it a gift from somewhere, the way it would just flow through me. It is a very amazing thing to be a part of.

Who are your musical idols – who would you compare yourself to?
I think the closest comparison I could make is John Mayer. I had loved music for a long time but it wasn’t until I started listening to John Mayer that I put the singing and guitar playing together and improved my skills in that way. He is a very underrated musician ( I recently got to see him live in Vancouver!).

Your gig schedule last year was crazy! How did you handle playing so many shows?
Yes, it was very busy, almost too busy! Ive always enjoyed having lots on my plate though, I’d rather be busy than sitting around. I get a rush out of booking myself up full throughout the year, its very rewarding.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far in your career?
I have had a couple different Original songs receive regular Radio rotation. But when I was only 16 I had my first song on the radio, and I would be lying if I said it wasn’t the most amazing feeling in the world to be the only kid in High School with his song on the Radio.

You recently launched your first EP “The Waves”? Can you share the inspiration behind it?
Well, I hate to be “that guy” but this batch of songs all started after going through a breakup. I went through a period where I was writing constantly as I found it helped me relax and take my mind off of things. I like to take negative emotion and use it as motivation to create something beautiful.

Which one of your songs means the most to you?
My favourite song on the EP is “When I Met You.” I love how the lyrics all flow together really well and its probably my favourite chorus/hook Ive ever written… It was stuck in my head for months!

What’s next after this EP? Will you be writing a full album?
After the EP I am planning on doing a second music video. I also have a bunch of songs that didn’t make it on this release that I am going to get recorded and share!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
In 5 years I hope to see myself having won a Juno or something cool like that, I feel like I could get out of Music and be happy as long as I one day achieved that. In 10 years I hope to still be playing, but more so helping the new talent coming through the ranks.

Thanks for the interview Jeff! All the best in your career!
